Funny Day Yesterday

And now time for some self depricating humor…Yesterday I was trying to set up a few new devices at our house so I needed to connect them to the wireless network. I spent literally 4 hours trying to troubleshoot why I just could not get it to connect. Along the way I commented how I “was awesome like Rain Man” in that i could remember the wireless key code off the top of my head. I disconnected r…outer, rebooted devices, uninstalled and reinstalled things, sat next to the router thinking the signal wasn’t strong enough….only to finally realize I was entering the wrong wireless key for the past 4 hours.

I felt like Clark Griswold putting up his lights…I then got to hear from my 7 year old how hilarious it was that I was typing the wrong password the entire time. I tried to spin it that I was trying to teach him a lesson in persistance…I don’t think he bought it.

  1. This just brought back a memory, I’ve been a techsupport geek since a very young age. I recall at about age 12 or 13, getting the first scanner we had as a family. I was already familiar with mac and windows PCs, and was burning CDs and things like that on my own, so I offered to hook the thing up. After about 3-4 hours of just brute force trying to figure it out, my Mom came downstairs to check on me and I was just sitting on the floor, exhausted, sipping on an IBC rootbeer. At first glance, my mom thought it was a bottle of real beer! After she caught herself and laughed, she brought me the user manual. I regrettably resorted to skimming it (still can’t read those things) and had the scanner up and running in 5 minutes.

Since then, I try to remind myself to reset, put myself in the shoes of someone who may not be a self-appointed ‘expert’, and take a new approach. That and a few (root)beers never hurts either.
